At the Sudwala caves you can embark on an epic underground adventure that takes you 2000m into the heart of the caves. The goal is the crystal chamber with its amazing array of sparkling aragonite crystals.
The crystal tour is a specialized tour for the adventurous, an organized excursion that involves wading through water,crystal-tour scrambling up and down rocks and crawling through small tunnels leaving you wet and dirty but awestruck by the splendor and beauty of the crystals that surround you in the chamber.
People of average agility will have no problems clearing the obstacles, and the guide is always there to push and pull when the going gets tough.
Due to the nature of the tour, it is not recommended for people who suffer from psychological ailments like claustrophobia.
The tour is not suitable for people with back or knee problems.
The tunnels can get very tight so people of a larger stature will not be able to take the tour. Anything too wide is liable to get perfectly stuck. To give some indication, the biggest person to fit through weighed 115kg. Children under the age of 14 years cannot take the tour. The crystal tour takes place on the first Saturday of the month and we can accommodate groups of up to 15 people at a time. It is essential that bookings are made in advance to avoid disappointment.
Tours can also be arranged for other days, provided there are a minimum of 5 in a group.
Time of arrival at the cave entrance for groups is 9.30am in time for departure into the cave at 10am.
Duration of the tour is about 4 hours.
A 50% deposit is required to secure the booking. Deposits must be made 14 days prior to the commencement of the tour. If the deposit is not received your place will be forfeited. If cancellations are made less than 2 weeks prior to the tour departing, the deposit will be forfeited.
Everybody will need to bring their own torch (preferably a head lamp as you will need your hands free to crawl). You need to wear old clothes (Shorts/tracksuit pants and a T-shirt or overalls) no jeans as they tend to be restrictive and shoes with good grip (boots or takkies). No open shoes unless they fasten to your feet. Do not wear jewelry or non-waterproof watches. No bulky rucksacks and no food or drinks are allowed in the cave so have a good breakfast before you set off.
